ONE, TWO, THREE, GO!
May 2008
The 2008 F1 season may just have started, but already the anticipation is building with all the teams hoping that this year they will win races, notch up podiums and score points. One thing’s for sure, Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari will be out to defend their crowns, while McLaren and Lewis Hamilton will be keen to get revenge.
In 2007 Hamilton came within a single point of winning the F1 title. Now the question everyone is asking, is can the McLaren driver win the title this season? Tune in for SuperSport’s live coverage of the practice, qualifying and main race during May on DStv to find out.
On Sunday May 11 F1 returns to Istanbul Turkish GP. Located on the Bosphorus Strait, which acts as a gateway between Asia and Europe, Istanbul is renowned for it’s traditional versus modern cultures and provides for one of the most culturally diverse destinations on the calendar.
Ferrari’s world champion Kimi Raikkonen heads to Turkey at the top of the championship table. He stretched his F1 lead with a dominant win from pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix last month. The win has left the Finn with 29 points nine clear of closest rival Hamilton, and has catapulted Ferrari back in front of BMW Sauber in the constructors’ standings.
Completing the top four spots in this year’s driver’s championship race is BMW Sauber driver, Robert Kubica on 19 points and ferrari’s Felippe Massa on 18 points.
With Ferrari’s two drivers the only drivers to win a Turkish GP to date (Raikkonen in 2005 for McLaren and his current team-mate Felipe Massa winning in 2006 and in 2007) it will be interesting to see if the likes of Hamilton or Kubica can claim victory this time around.
Then on Sunday May 25, it’s off to Monte Carlo for one of the world’s greatest and most challenging motor-racing events – the Monaco Grand Prix. No other race in the F1 calendar has the glamour, the history or the incredible atmosphere of Monaco.
Unarguably the most attractive location in F1, the race which takes place around Monte Carlo’s two mile ‘Circuit de Monaco’ is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious motor sport races in the world.
Each year, thousands of people descend on the small principality of Monaco, and the luxury hotels that dot the area swell with F1 fans. The race also attracts royalty, Hollywood stars, supermodels and multi-millionaires who all want to see, and been seen at, this prestigious event.
The race takes place along the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, rather than on a purpose built track. The circuit is unique in the F1 world, in that it remains unchanged each year. Taking six weeks to erect, it includes many elevation changes, tight corners and narrow sections, which make it one of the most demanding tracks in F1.
Due to the tight, twisting nature of the circuit, the race favours the skill of the driver, rather than the power of the cars, and is therefore regarded as one of the most prestigious races to win.
